Can Plastic Reusable Packaging Ever Be Truly Green?
We doubt our response is going to be acceptable to die hard, anti plastic people but we believe plastic can be very green, not necessarily for its content or origin , but for what it can save.
Assume a standard corrugated container can be potentially reused a few times. With a special design or a heavy duty board grade, that life expectancy may be able to be doubled. If you add an eco friendly coating perhaps that life cycle can be tripled to as many as eight to twelve uses. On the other hand a well designed and constructed plastic container can potentially be used and reused eighty, ninety or in some cases hundreds of times depending on the product and application.
We realize corrugated is a renewable source and plastic is either oil or natural gas based but it is clear to see reusable plastic containers probably save millions of trees annually. Corrugated board may be more eco friendly from some perspectives but it also consumes a great deal of energy and water to produce, especially if it is virgin board being created. Add to that the fact that many of the reusable plastic products we offer are made at least in part of recycled plastics so that plastic waste is put to good use, creating products with extended life cycles rather than ending up in a landfill.
Stock, Custom and Standard/Non-Stock Packaging Options
Most plastic products are molded into shape and in some cases die cut into the desired design so tooling is an important factor to be considered. It is also how we are able to categorize product into the following categories:
Stock -- the tooling has already been created and is used to manufacture a product for inventory and is available immediately for anyone ordering it.
Custom – is a product we manufacture that is customer specific so they typically buy and own the tooling. Obviously this adds upfront cost but it also means no one else will have the same identical product.
Standard/Non-Stock – the tooling (mold or cutting die) already exists but the product is made on an “as needed” basis and it is not a stock item. Since it is being manufactured per order from existing tooling, dimensions cannot be changed but usually the product may be able to be custom colored or printed.
